Ten years ago the Phillies staged one of the most remarkable stretch run comebacks in baseball history. On September 12 they were seven games behind the Mets with just 17 games left. No team in baseball had ever overcome that large a deficit with so few games remaining.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll take a day-by-day look at how they rallied to edge the Mets on the final day of season through excerpts from “A September to Remember,” a feature in the 2017 Phillies Yearbook.

Beat Nationals, 7–6, at RFK Stadium. 1 ½ GB.

The Phillies trailed, 6–2, going into the third after starter Kyle Lohse was knocked out after just two innings. Jayson’s Werth’s three-run homer in the sixth sparked a 4-run rally that pulled them to within one. Jimmy Rollins scored the tying run in the seventh and drove in the winning run in the eighth with a double.

“We’re right where we need to be,” Werth said.

After the game, players huddled around a small television set in the cramped visitor’s clubhouse and cheered raucously as the Marlins rallied to beat the Mets, 8–7, in 10 innings.
