Phillies totals: 15 runs, 30 hits, 436 pitches thrown by 15 different pitchers. Rockies: 22 runs, 40 hits, 400 pitches by 11 pitchers. Eight of the Phillies 15 runs came on Friday, a come from behind 8-7 win, their lone one.

Cole again pitched well on Sunday but again came out with the L. In his 15 starts, the Phillies have scored three or fewer runs 11 times. While he’s in the game, a total of 31 runs, zero on Sunday.

The second consecutive three-city trip ended 3-7. Sunday’s two runs in the ninth inning lowered their average runs per game on the road to 3.20, lowest in the majors. Unfortunately, the Phillies next three trips are all three city stops. Then starting July 30 through their last home game (September 22), the Phillies have 34 home dates and 16 on the road.

Game 71 is tonight, the first of three nights against the Nationals who are making their first Citizens Bank Park visit in 2013. (The Braves still haven’t been here). They are followed by three with the Mets. Against the NL East the Phillies are 16-9.

“The Phillies are well-known for drafting lots of tools players, but they also have the ability to find Tyler Cloyd-like college guys who end up contributing in the majors when people don’t expect them too. This draft follows that pattern. Crawford, Sandberg, and Hernandez were all considered potential first-round picks at some point in the last 12 months: to snap up all three of them is quite a coup.”

Minor League Review (Weekend Edition)
**Lehigh Valley took 2 of 3 from Scranton. RH Ethan Martin (6-3) allowed 1 run in 7 innings to pick up Friday’s 4-1 win. Yesterday, LV won, 5-4, in 11 innings, a walk-off win in which they didn’t have a hit in that inning: walk, walk, hit by pitch, Cody Overebeck SF. All three games were sold out, 10,1000.

**Reading swept 3 in Richmond, 3-1 in 10, 3-1 and 5-4. Derrick Mitchell’s 2-out double in the ninth inning tied Friday’s game and Edgar Duran’s double won it in the next inning. Saturday, 2 runs in the 8th, wild pitch and RBI single by Albert Cartwright produced the winning runs. Sunday, LH Austin Wright (2-3) picked up his 2nd straight win.

**Clearwater was on a 3-day All-Star Game break.

**Lakewood won 11-5 on Friday, scoring 3 in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Dropped the next two at Hagerstown, 3-2 and 9-6.

**Williamsport opens its season tonight at State College. Home opener is tomorrow night against the same team.

June 17, 2012–Playing in Toronto, Jim Thome leads off the second inning with a home run, his 100th as a Phillie. Thome became the 4th player in major league history with at least 100 home runs for three different teams, following Reggie Jackson, Darrell Evans, and Alex Rodriguez.

Four batters into the game, the Phillies had a run. Then nothing, which too often is a pattern they’ve followed. This time, they piled up hits but couldn’t hit with runners on base. After seven innings, they had 11 hits and 13 left on base and one run.

Tailing, 2-1, the offense strung together three straight hits to take a 3-2 lead. With two more runners on base and no out, the offense went dormant again, blowing a chance to blow open the game. 15 hits and 15 LOB, both season highs. Suddenly, a Cliff loss turned into a Cliff win.

In the first inning on radio last night, LA said, “Phillies have two stoppers. One is a starter and other a closer.” He was referring to Cliff and Pap. 10 times Cliff has started after a loss. He’s 7-1 in those starts. It was his first save opportunity since May 29 for Pap.

10-game road trip ends with three games in Denver where the Phillies are 34-30 at Coors Field. Overall, the Phillies have a 90-62 record against the Rockies, one of the top offensive clubs in the league. Back home Monday night for six games against the East and then another 10-game journey.

Elias Sports Bureau
Phillies became the 10th team since 1900 to collect at least 16 hits in a nine inning game and score three or fewer runs. Only one other team won such a game and guess what, it was the Phillies, 3-0, over the Pirates, July 6, 1954, behind Curt Simmons. They got 17 hits that time in eight innings.

June 15, 1949–1B Eddie Waitkus, in his first year with the Phillies, is shot by 19-year-old Ruth Steinhagen in a Chicago hotel room. Critically injured, Waitkus misses the rest of the season, but recovers in time to help the Whiz Kids in 1950.

June 15, 1991–RHP Andy Ashby becomes the first and only Phillies pitcher of the century to strike out the side on nine pitches when he whiffs 1B Hal Morris, LF Todd Benzinger and C Jeff Reed in the fourth inning of a 3-1 loss to Cincinnati at the Vet.

During the five-game losing streak, they’ve also lost games in the seventh and ninth innings.

Last night the Twins scored twice with the winning run coming across home plate be on a wild pitch. Ironically, the Phillies are now 23-2 when leading after seven innings. When leading after eight, 24-0. When trailing after eight, 3-32.

While blame can be pointed toward the bullpen, the offense again faltered. A blown call in the first inning paved the way for two Phillies runs. Four of the first six batters reached base. After that, it was silent night against Pelfrey, who wound up pitching seven innings, his longest outing of the season. After the first inning, the Phillies had four hits.

Cliff gets the job of trying to stop the losing streak, a familiar role for him his season as the series ends tonight. Phillies fly to Denver to take on the Rockies for three weekend games.

**Four straight hits produced two, fourth-inning runs off Cole. That’s all he allowed in seven innings but once again, the offense was silent when he was in the game. How silent? 24 runs in his last 12 starts.

**Davis walked the leadoff hitter in the 8th. That hitter came around to score the winning run. So, when Cole starts, Phillies are 2-12. The eighth inning was a real nightmare a year ago.

**Going into the game, enemy hitters had 15 hits in 18 innings, a batting .329 against Walters. The Phillies had five singles and a double in 7.1 innings, his longest outing of the season.

**Fresh from their longest winning streak of the year, five games, they’ve now tied their longest losing streak, four games.

June 11, 1985–Phillies’ greatest offensive game ever…26-7 win over New York begins with a nine-run first inning, highlighted by LF Von Hayes’ two home runs, a solo shot and a grand slam. No other Phillies player ever hit two homers in the first inning. 3B Schu and 2B Juan Samuel tie a major league record with seven at-bats each.

**Cliff walked three Friday night after none in previous two starts. Two of the three scored and the Brewers won for the first time since July, 8, 1911, when trailing by four runs.

**Leading, 4-2, Howard led off the sixth that night with a double, their last hit of the game. A chance to add on went 1-2-3 quietly.

**Saturday the offense was Domonic, second-inning HR, two-run double in the eight in a 4-3 loss.

**Domonic and Erik have been driving the offensive bus. Kratz left Saturday’s game with a knee injury, was put on the DL and returned to Philadelphia for tests today.

**Suddenly, the Phillies are down to their third and fourth catchers on the depth chart.

**Lohse had lost five in a row and right off the bat, three of the first four Phillies got hits but Mike Young was thrown out at home plate. Lohse worked eight innings, first time in two seasons.

**Offense didn’t produce another hit until Quintero, #3 catcher, homered with two out in the eighth. That blast meant the Phillies have gone deep in 14 straight game, which has produced a 7-7 record.

**Pettibone, for the second time in three starts, gave up four first-inning runs (on three hits) and then settled down but the Brewers scored five times in their last three at-bats in a 9-1 romp prompting radio voice Scott Franzke, “LA, it’s time for a shallow thought.” After a pause, LA responded, “What is the speed of dark.” Scott, “I don’t know.” LA: “Neither do I.”

**With Mike Adams nursing a sore bicep, the bullpen was a bit thinner for the weekend. Pap finally got in a game and gave up a solo home run in the eighth to Maldonado, the Milwaukee catcher who went in the game with a .161 average.

**Bad news, the Phillies went 2-5 in back-to-back weekends against the Brewers.

**Good news, the Phillies won’t see them again until next year.

**Phillies left Milwaukee last night for Minneapolis and a three-game series that starts on Tuesday night.

Draft Roundup
A total of 1,216 players were selected by major league teams in the annual First-Year Player draft that concluded Saturday evening. 41 of those belonged to the Phillies.
Notes among the Phillies selections:

**OF Cord Sandberg, no relation to Ryne, 3rd round, was ranked 5th among corner outfielders by Baseball America. Sandberg was a two-sport star who has a scholarship offer to Mississippi State as a quarterback. Ryne also was a standout quarterback in high school but chose baseball.

**C Jake Sweaney, 5th round, is a wide-receiver/defensive back in high school with an offer from Oregon. Among catchers, Baseball America ranked him 10th. 3B Joe Martarano, 13th, has an offer to play linebacker at Boise State.

**LHP Denton Keys, 11th, threw four no-hitters at Rye (CO) high school this spring, including a perfect game. He has a baseball offer from Kansas.

**LHP Ben Wetzler, 6th and RHP Dan Child, 18th, both pitched for Oregon State.

**RHP Griffin Jax, 12th and RHP Dimitri Casas, are from Cherry Creek HS in Colorado, same school that produced Brad Lidge.

**RHP Matt Soren, 19th and OF Nick Ferdinand, 35th, both played for the University of Delaware, which had four players selected over the three days.

**3B Trey Williams, 8th, is the son of ex-big leaguer Earl Williams; 2B Cavan Biggio, 29th, is the son of Craig Biggio, another big leaguer, and RHP Mark Leiter, 22nd, is the son of Mark Leiter, former Phillies pitcher.

**SS Jose Haros out of San Fernando HS in California was the Phillies last selection, overall #1,201.

**Two other sons of Phillies alumnus were selected by other clubs, LHP J. D. Underwood and RHP Cal Quantrill.

Those selected have until July 12 to sign.

**Lehigh Valley won 3 of 4 to get to .500. 3B Cody Asche, 7-16; hitting .350 in lasts 10 games. 1B Cody Overbeck had driven in a run in 5 straight, 9 total. INF Michael Martinez had a 10-game hitting streak end Sunday.

**Reading dropped 2 of 3 to Harrisburg, getting a total of 12 hits. LHP Jesse Biddle (3-6) lost his 3rd in a row, 1-0, in 1st game Saturday.

**Clearwater lost 2 and then won last 2, a Sunday doubleheader, all against Dunedin. LF Aaron Altherr’s 2-run homer in the 6th was the game-winner in the opener, 2-0.

**Lakewood was rained out at Delmarva on Friday and Saturday and exchanged shutouts in Sunday DH, losing 8-0 before ending a 4-game losing streak, 2-0, in the second game.

June 10, 1972–To change their luck, Phillies wear blue road uniforms at home only to lose to Atlanta, 15-3. The blue road uniforms never appeared again at the Vet.

June 10, 1975–3B Mike Schmidt hits a ball off a public address speaker hanging from the Astrodome roof, 117 feet up and 300 feet from home plate. Schmidt settles for a single off LHP Claude Osteen in the Phillies’ 12-0 win.

June 10, 1981–1B Pete Rose needs two hits to surpass Stan Musial as the all-time NL hit leader. Rose singles in his first at-bat against Houston RHP Nolan Ryan, who then strikes out Pete the next three at-bats. Phils win, 5-4, before 57,386. Two days later, players go on strike until August, eliminating 55 games.

The offense, which has shown some consistent life of late, got on the board early and kept adding on. Delmon went deep, the 21st homer in the Phillies last 11 games, most in the majors for that time frame.

Draft Time
Baseball America rated J.P. Crawford as the top rated shortstop and that’s who the Phillies selected as the 16th overall selection in the draft last night.

Most shocking Crawford fact is the fact he was born in 1995 which means he’s awfully young and I’m ancient.

Now, in case you are wondering what the Phillies did on June 6 of the year J.P. was born, we lost, 1-0, to San Diego’s Fernando Valenzuela. Score probably made J.P. cry.

Round 2 produced a switch-hitting catcher, Andrew Knapp, a college player out of California. Among the top catching prospects, Baseball America ranked him sixth.

Both Crawford and Knapp have pro baseball blood lines. Crawford’s uncle is Carl Crawford. Knapp’s dad caught in the minors for 11 years.

Draft continues at 1 p.m. today and concludes tomorrow afternoon.

June 7, 1910–RHP Eddie Stack is the first Phillies pitcher to toss a shutout in his major league debut, 1-0, over Chicago at Baker Bowl.

June 7, 1983–LHP Steve Carlton passes RHP Nolan Ryan on the all-time strikeout list (3,522) when he fans St. Louis LF Lonnie Smith in the third inning of a 2-1 loss at the Vet in 1:57. Carlton and Ryan see-saw back and forth before Ryan takes the lead permanently late in the season.

June 7, 1985–Mike Schmidt makes his first appearance at home as a first baseman; Rick Schu plays third. Final score: Montreal 3, Phillies 1.

June 8, 1989–SS Steve Jeltz becomes the first Phillie to homer from each side of the plate in a game, a 15-11 win over Pittsburgh, one of the wildest games in Vet history. The Pirates score 10 runs in the first inning but the Phillies battle back to win on a five-run eighth inning. Pittsburgh broadcaster Jim Rooker boasts early in the game, “If the Pirates lose this game, I’ll walk from here to Pittsburgh.” Rooker keeps his word, walking from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh in the fall and raising money for charity.

June 9, 1982–Steve Carlton (7-6) sets a club record for most strikeouts by a LHP in a nine-inning game, by fanning 16 Cubs in a 4-2 win at the Vet. Lefty fanned Ryne Sandberg four times.

In the last four games, the offense has scored six or more runs, which produced four wins. For the season, 22-6 when putting up those numbers.

Domonic got back on the home run track, his 11th in the last 13 games.

Phillies left after the game for Milwaukee where they begin a four-game series Thursday night. Since Miller Park opened in 2001, the Phillies are 20-18 there. 10-game trip also takes them to Minnesota and Colorado. Actually, 20 of the next 26 games are on the road.

A lot of focus will be on every team when the First-Year Player Draft begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

With a game-tying homer in the 10th and a walk-off homer in the 11th, he became the first Phillies player to hit a pair of homers in extra innings. On top of that, he became the first big leaguer to hit two homers in extra innings, including a walk-off slam.

He is the ninth player in Phillies history with an extra inning slam. Cy Williams did it twice, 1924 and 1925. Howard hit the last one, 2005 in Atlanta. Dale Murphy had the last walk-off slam, 1991 vs. the Cubs.

Once again, the Phillies try to climb back to .500 this afternoon in the home-stand finale. Cole is also trying to win his second game. After the game, they head for Milwaukee and a four-game series that starts a 10-game road trip.

Draft Time
One more day of reviewing reports in preparation for the First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. First two rounds will take place that evening at the MLB Network studios.
Phillies have the 16th and 53rd selections the first day.

In eight starts since: 5-0, 2.06 ERA (11 ER, 48.0 IP), 47 SO, .238 OPP AVG … The 22-year-old was selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2012 draft out of the University of Texas and signed by Steve Cohen.

This Date
June 5, 1948, 1st game–CF Richie Ashburn ties the modern NL rookie record by hitting safely in 23 straight games in a 6-5 win at Chicago. The record was set in 1921 by another Phillie, 3B Goldie Rapp.

No other Phillies player ever won back-to-back player of the week honors. If he wins another, he’ll match Von Hayes (1986) with three. No other Phillies player won more than three in a season.

When it comes to home run streaks in Phillies history, Domonic joined Bobby Abreu (2005) with nine homers in 10 games. Cy Williams hit 11 in 15 games in 1923. Dick Allen’s best was nine in 14 games.

Meanwhile, KK won his 10th straight over the Marlins, upping his career record to 12-2. It was his fourth career complete game, two coming this season, tops on the staff. He even chipped in with his first career triple. He threw 105 pitches, 75 for strikes.

Players of the month……….
Outfielder Kelly Dugan (Clearwater Threshers) is the Phillies Minor League Player of the Month for May. Pitching honors for the month go to left-hander Yoel Mecias (Lakewood BlueClaws).

Dugan, 22, batted .314 in May with 33 hits in 26 games, reaching base safely in 23 of those contests. Selected in the second round of the 2009 draft, he leads the powerhouse Threshers offense in on-base percentage (.393) and slugging percentage (.570). A native of San Diego, Calif., Dugan is the son of Hollywood actor and director, Dennis Dugan.

Mecias, signed in 2010 as an amateur free agent, went 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA in six starts for Lakewood. Born in Santa Teresa del Tuy, Venezuela, Mecias struck out 37 batters in 30.0 innings, averaging 11.1 SO/9.0 IP for the month.
The 6-foot-2 lefty allowed one earned run or less in all six of his starts, lowering his ERA from 7.53 at the start of the month, to 3.45 entering June.
