Clearwater lost, 4-3, at Palm Beach, giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth with two out–walk, two wild pitches, passed ball, three singles.
Lakewood and Greensboro traded shutouts, 1-0 and 2-0. Julio Reyes (1-2) and Ulises Joaquin (3rd save) combined on the 2-0 win. 1B Willians Astudillo’s 18-game hitting streak ended in the first game.
Williamsport begins its season on June 13.
Gulf Coast League Phillies start their season June 20.
Reading Fightin Phils will retire Jim Bunning’s uniform number (14) prior to the 7:05 p.m. Thursday, June 12, game against New Britain. Bunning wore that number when he managed Reading in 1972.
Charlie Manuel will be roasted at the annual Alumni Luncheon For Senior Citizens, Friday noon, August 8, in the Diamond Club at Citizens Bank Park. Tickets can be purchased on Phillies.com. Charlie will be inducted into the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame the next night.
Cam Bedrosian, son of Steve Bedrosian, former Phillies pitcher, has been recalled by the Angels. Like dad, Cam is a relief pitcher.
June 5, 1948, 1st game: CF Richie Ashburn ties the modern NL rookie record by hitting safely in 23 straight games in a 6-5 win at Chicago. The record was set in 1921 by another Phillie, 3B Goldie Rapp.
