Rookie Saves Weekend
A rookie wins his major league debut for the Phillies who are shutout twice in the other 3 weekend games, getting just 3 hits on Friday night and being no-hit yesterday by Beckett.
In all, the Phillies had 10 hits for the weekend, 7 coming Saturday afternoon when David Buchanan won. #55 was 5-1 in 9 AAA starts this year before going to the bigs. A year ago at AA Reading, he was 1-5 in 10 starts.
Beckett threw 128 pitches, 80 for strikes. He threw a first-pitch strike to 23 of the 30 batters he faced. It was the fifth no-hitter by a Dodgers pitcher against the Phillies: Dazzy Vance (1925), Sal Maglie (1956), Sandy Koufax (1964) and Bill Singer (1970). Josh and Sandy did it in Philadelpia.
Career hits for the Phillies:
Mike Schmidt (2,234)
