Spring Training Memories
Jim Kaat (LHP, 1976-79)
“I wore No. 21 with the original Washington Senators training in Orlando, Florida. I was nervous but proud to wear a big league ‘uni’. Coming out of Michigan, I loved the warm weather. There was only one field in those days and I didn’t like the amount of time they made us stand around in the outfield doing nothing.”

Just four more Spring training games at Bright House Field, Clearwater after today
(3/22 – Atlanta; 3/24 – Boston; 3/26 – Tampa Bay; 3/28 – Toronto). With the extra week due to the WBC, in terms of calendar days it’s one of the longest Spring Trainings ever, but it seems to have gone by very fast and feels like one of the shortest..

Gauntlett Eldemire was a lead off hitter/base stealer type and was one of the fastest guys in the organization. The poor kid just couldn’t avoid injuries, however.
Australian Tim Kennelly was a infielder for a couple of years in the Phillies system that they tried to convert to a pitcher, unsuccessfully.

They just started try Kennelly on the mound last season. I thought he was a “work in progress” and was going to get a fair shot this year?
