Tale of 2 Bullpens

Part of the Phillies struggles this season involved the offense not adding on and the bullpen adding on.

In the series opener against the Mets on Tuesday, Ryan hit a grand slam four batters into the first inning but the offense could add only one more run on a fifth-inning homer by Chase.  Other than those two long balls, the Phillies had only four other hits in the 10-inning loss.  The Mets bullpen tossed 5.2 scoreless innings.

The Phillies bullpen’s scoreless streak ended with a game-tying run in the 8th inning (a walk starting that inning) and then imploded in the 10th inning, boosting the Mets record vs. the Phillies to 9-4, 6-1 at Citizens Bank Park. Prior to the eighth-inning, they had a string of 15 scoreless innings dating back to August 22.

Howard passed Sherry Magee (892) for sixth place on the Phillies all-time RBI list.

A year ago, the Phillies dominated the NL East, 43-29.  This year, 19-30.
