Pitching Dominates Nationals
Terrific starting pitcher, nearly perfect relievers and clutch hitting added up to a Phillies three-game sweep of the first-place Nationals over the weekend at Citizens Bank Park, 4-2, 4-2, 4-1.
KK, Doc and Cliff allowed 5 runs in 20.2 innings with 14 strikeouts, The bullpen worked 6.1 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 13 strikeouts.
RBI leaders were J-Roll (4), Mayberry (3), Chase (2). Hit leaders: J-Roll (5), Mayberry (4), Fransden (3). Utley (2), Howard (2), Nix (2).
Cliff doubled in the first run on Sunday, his first win at home in 49 weeks, 6 days. Since he beat the Braves, 9-0, at home last September 5, he was winless in 12 starts. 14 different Phillies hurlers posted wins at home during since that time.
The sweep moved the Phillies to 9.5 games out of a wildcard berth. Seems like a stretch to make it but a year ago, the Cardinals came from way back.
While the Nationals offense was grounded by the Phillies arms, Mother Nature kept the team in Philadelphia Sunday night. Scheduled to start a series in Miami on Tuesday night, the Nationals delayed their Florida flight until Monday afternoon because of hurricane Isaac.
