Arroyo Dominates

Bronson Arroyo has really struggled against the Phillies in his career but last night, he had the Phillies hitters struggling.  Going into the game he was 1-7, the lone win coming on July 22, 2000, working seven innings.  He had lost six in a row and only once did he last more than five innings in his 10 starts.

At Citizens Bank Park, he was 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA, 24 hits in 12.1 innings.  That changed last night as he retired the first 14 Phillies. Other than Domonic’s homer and double, he completely shut down the offense.  He didn’t work from the stretch until Brown’s eighth-inning double.

Bruce’s homer in the eighth gave the Reds a 3-1 pad.  It was the 22nd homer the Phillies have allowed in the eighth inning this season.

A ninth-inning single sent Arroyo to the showers and brought in Chapman.  The Phillies second run was charged to Arroyo.  They had the tying run on base when Howard ended the game with a hard line drive to left.

So, the Reds have won two in a row against the Phillies for the first time since Aril 2008 and the first time at Citizens Bank Park since August 2006.

Four-game set ends tonight with a dandy pitching matchup of aces, Cole vs. Cueto.
