Brewers Ride Slam
The Phillies beat the Brewers in their last at-bat in three straight games at Citizens Bank Park last month. Last night, the Brewers returned the favor with an eighth-inning grand slam and stretched their winning streak at Miller Park to seven straight. Final, 7-4.
The homer was the fourth of the night for the Brewers and 89th of the season at home, against only 52 on the road. Two of their homers hit the top of the fence and bounced over.
Phillies loaded the bases with two out in the top of the 9th but couldn’t pull off another last at-bat win.
It was the Brewers 5th win against the NL East vs. 12 losses. The Phillies are 17-9 against the NL Central.
Down On The Farm
Lehigh Valley was a 5-2 winner at Buffalo. C Sebastian Valle had his second straight 3-hit game, including his 3rd homer since promotion to AAA. Win went to LHS Tom Cochran (7-5); 3rd save for RH Justin DeFratus, 1.1 innings, 2 strikeouts.
Reading lost a 14-12 slugfest against Trenton. 6th inning featured 21 batters and 13 runs (7 for Trenton, 6 for Reading). LF D’Arby Myers, 5-5, 2 steals. 3B Cody Asche, 3rd 3-hit game this week, 4 RBI; leads organization with 143 hits. Hitting streak stretched to 12 games. 1B Darin Ruf, 1-5, ending his streak of homering in 5 straight games.
Clearwater lost, 4-2, at Tampa. 3B Placido Polanco batted 2nd, 1-3, with and RBI.
Lakewood ended a 3-game losing streak, 5-4, at Greensboro. 3B Maikel Franco, double, triple, 3 RBI (69 for the season). RHS Colin Kleven (7-8) was winner, 1 earned run, 6 hits, 7 innings.
Williamsport lost its 3rd in a row, 8-3, vs. Batavia. LF Larry Greene, 3 doubles, 4 at-bats. SS Roman Quinn, 1-3, 2 RBI, club-high 18th steal.
Gulf Coast League Phillies edged the Tigers, 2-1, on a walk-off single by 2B Carlos Valenzuela. 2 hits each for C Willians Astudillo and RF Dylan Cozens. RH Keivy Rojas (4-1) picked up a blown save and the win.
August 17, 1894: Collecting 28 singles out of a club-record 36 hits, Phillies destroy visiting Louisville, 29-4. OF Sam Thompson hit for the cycle, three singles, a double, triple and home run in seven at-bats.
August 17, 1957: CF Richie Ashburn, known for his ability to foul pitches off, hits spectator Alice Roth twice in the same at-bat. The first one breaks her nose; the second hits her while she is being removed on a stretcher. Ironically, she is the wife of Earl Roth, sports editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin.
August 17, 1972: LHP Steve Carlton wins his 20th game of the season and 15th consecutive, longest streak in Phillies history, 9-4 over Cincinnati before 42,635 at the Vet. Lefty had 5 shutouts in the streak and a 1.33 ERA.
