Phillies Salvage 5-5 Trip
What seemed like mission impossible at one point, the Phillies salvaged a 5-5 road trip out west, their longest journey of the season. It was the first series win for them on the road.
Cole did the job yesterday afternoon on the mound and in the batter’s box. Except for one game on the trip, the starting pitching has been outstanding. Cole’s walked just three in four starts this season, while piling up 30 strikeouts.
The five-run ninth inning two games ago seemed to get the offense clicking. Seven different batters produced a 13-hit attack. A crooked number (five runs) in the sixth inning put the game away. J-Roll had a tough trip at bat and didn’t start yesterday. Some pitchers will pay because you know Jimmy will get rolling.
Day off today and then the Cubs for four days starting Friday night. Then, back on the road, Atlanta and Washington as the Phillies return to NL east action.
Two Alumni are with the Cubs, manager Dale Sveum and RHP Lendy Castillo, who was taken by Chicago in the Rule 5 draft last winter.
Sveum, an infielder, played 54 games in the Phillies pinstriped uniform in 1992 and hit .178. He was acquired from Milwaukee for Bruce Ruffin during the 1991 winter meetings and sent to the White Sox for Keith Shepherd, August 0, 1992.
Hitting: .235 (11th in NL)
Home runs: 7 (16th)
ERA: 4.37 (14th)
Saves: 1 (tied for 15th)
Fielding percentage: .977 (14th)
