Lineup: Looking Ahead, Looking Back

February 14 is Valentine’s Day.  For Phillies pitchers and catchers it is also is the first workout day at Carpenter Field.  Two reasons love prevails on this date.

As the Phillies prep for their 128th season, the ball club my rank as the greatest in their history.  Six deep in starting pitchers, All-Stars everywhere but right field and behind the plate and two outstanding relievers for the end of the games.

You know the rotation and the closer and you also know who is in the everyday lineup.  OK, right field may still to be determined.

Matthew Forman, in a recent issue of Baseball America, listed the Phillies’ top 10 prospects.  The feature also included a chart, “Projected 2014 Lineup.”  In his view:

C Sebastian Valle
1B Ryan Howard
2B Chase Utley
3B Placido Polanco
SS Jimmy Rollins
LF Jonathan Singleton
CF Shane Victorino
RF  Domonic Brown
SP Roy Halladay
SP Cole Hamels
SP Cliff Lee
SP Roy Oswalt
SP Brody Colvin
Closer Ryan Madson

OK, that’s looking ahead. How about looking back, say like 10 years ago:
C Johnny Estrada
1B Travis Lee
2B Marlon Anderson
3B Scott Rolen
SS Rollins
LF Pat Burrell
CF Doug Glanville
RF Bobby Abreu
SP Randy Wolf
SP Robert Person
SP Omar Daal
SP David Coggin
SP Amaury Telemaco
Closer Joe Mesa

Guess you can say, time has changed for the better.

Who is Singleton? AND did I miss that we no longer have Ibanez?
I noted today four remaining free agent OF possibilities, assuming Blanton/Ibanez moves and we have the money.
