Players of the Week (July 24-30)

Player: SS Adrian Cardenas, Gulf Coast Phillies.  Hit .650 in 5 games with 13 hits and 5 RBI.  For the season, he is hitting .325 in 30 games, with 20 runs scored, 18 RBI and 8 steals in 10 tries.  For July, he batted .378.  The 18-year-old was a supplemental pick in this year’s draft out of Miami Lakes, FL. 

Pitcher:  LHP Derek Griffith, Clearwater . . . Won two starts, allowing 3 total R in 13 IP, while giving up 11 hits, walking 3 and striking out 8.  For the season, he is 8-7 with a 3.89 ERA for 21 starts.  He’s won 3 of his last 4 decisions.   The 23-year-old was a 17th round selection in 2003 out of Birmingham Southern College

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons
Lost first game of the week and finished with 6 straight wins to take over first place in the Northern Division . . . RHP Scott Mathieson (3-0), in his final AAA start, was 6-1 winner on Tuesday, 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 SO . . . LHP Eude Brito improved to 9-6 with 7 shutout innings the next night . . .LHP Brian Mazone (9-1) extended his winning streak to 7 games on Friday . . . RHPGavin Floyd (5-2) lost on Monday and picked up a win  with 8 shutout innings on Saturday . . . Four relievers followed with a shutout on Sunday, giving SWB 11 wins in their last 13 games . . . 3B Brennan King sprained his right ankle on Sunday and is on the DL . . . CF-RF Michael Bourn hit in all 7 games, extending his hitting streak to 14 games; he had 9 hits, 8 runs and 4 steals in the 7 games . . . CF-RF Chris Roberson stolen 6 bases . . . C Carlos Ruiz hit his 10th and 11 HR and drove in 7 runs.

Reading Phillies
Spilt 6 games and moved into third place . . . LH closer Chris Key recorded his 12th save, LHP James Happ (5-1) won his fifth straight and RHP Tim McCaskey (3-6) picked up Reading’s third win . . . RHP Joe Bisenius, promoted from Clearwater on July 23, saved Happ’s win on Saturday.  In 2 AA appearances: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO . . . 3B Jesus Merchan had a double, triple and 6 RBI in Wednesday’s 10-6 win.

Clearwater Threshers
4-3 week kept the Threshers tied for first place in the West Division . . . LHP Derek Griffith (8-7) won twice . . . RHP Kyle Kendrick (6-4) won his fourth straight . . . 3B Mike Costanzo hit his 9th and 10th HR . . . Daytona RF Ryan Harvey was a 1-man wrecking crew in his team’s 10-9 win on Friday; he homered 4 times and drove in 6 . . . CF Greg Golson hit .346 in his first 7 games at Clearwater with 2 HR . . . SS Hector Made (ma-day), acquired in the Sal Fasano trade, hit .389 in his first 5 games with Clearwater.

Lakewood BlueClaws
4-3 week, including wins in the last 3 games . . . Lakewood maintained Northern Division lead . . . RHP Carlos Carrasco gave up 2 runs in 13 total innings with 14 strikeouts but had 2 no decisions . . . RHP closer Andrew Barb (6-2) had 2 wins . . . RHP Brett Harker recorded his 14th save with 3 hitless relief innings of a 2-1 win on Friday for LHP Matt Maloney (13-5).  Maloney set a franchise record with his 13th win.  He leads the league in wins, ERA (1.55) and strikeouts (133) . . . 3B Welinson Baez had 10 hits in a 7-game hitting streak; included was his 28th double.

Batavia Muckdogs
1-5 week, a week that started with 2 losses during which Batavia’s offense produced 2 total runs on 6 hits . . . Week ended with a pair of 2-0 shutouts in Sunday’s doubleheader; the offense totaled 11 singles in the DH . . . RHP John Brownell (2-0) picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless relief innings on Friday . . . Muckdogs fell to 5th place in the Pinckney Division, 3.5 games behind first-place Jamestown.

Gulf Coast Phillies
5-3 week, pulling them into a fourth-place tie in the Northern Division . . . LHP Walter Tejeda (2-2) pitched 6 shutouts innings in a 2-0 win on Thursday . . . RHP Darren Byrd (2-1) won the next day . . . RHP Robert Roth (1-1) threw 5 shutouts innings on Saturday . . . RHP Kyle Drabek is off to a rough pro start, 8 ER in 5 IP . . . CF D’Arby Myers had 9 hits and 5 runs scored in 5 of games.
